President urges quick resolution of outstanding issues with India

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for the quick resolution of outstanding issues between Bangladesh and India through dialogue and mutually acceptable solutions to further strengthen bilateral relations.

He made the remarks on Tuesday when Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

The President stressed the importance of resolving issues of mutual interest fairly, saying this would help strengthen trust and confidence between the peoples of the two countries.

He particularly urged India to take effective steps to ensure Bangladesh receives a fair share of the waters of common rivers, including the Ganges and the Teesta. In response, Trivedi said the Indian government was taking positive measures in this regard.

Alamgir said Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relationship with India as a close neighbour and key trade and development partner. He expressed interest in building a respectful and mutually beneficial partnership based on sovereign equality, national interests and dignity.

The President also highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, water resources, technology, connectivity, culture and people-to-people relations.

The Indian High Commissioner congratulated Alamgir on assuming office and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh based on mutual respect, trust and partnership.

Both sides expressed hope that bilateral relations would become more positive, productive and people-oriented, contributing to peace, development and prosperity in the region.
