DINAJPUR: Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain has stressed the importance of tree plantation in maintaining environmental balance, calling on people to plant more trees to help build a greener Bangladesh.
He made the call on Saturday while inaugurating a three-day tree plantation campaign and tree fair in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur under the theme, "Let’s decorate the country through tree plantation, Bangladesh first."
The minister said tree fairs are being held across the country to encourage the planting of fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal trees.
He urged people to make use of vacant spaces around their homes by planting saplings, noting that trees provide long-term benefits through fruit production, environmental conservation and medicinal value.
Dr. Zahid also said the government is continuing its efforts to promote public welfare, strengthen social security and support the country's overall development.
Following the inauguration, he formally launched the repair and beautification work of the Nawabganj Upazila Parishad auditorium and distributed sewing machines, educational stipends and financial assistance among beneficiaries under various government programmes.
The programme was attended by government officials, public representatives, teachers, students and local dignitaries.
