A fishing trawler carrying 13 fishermen sank in the Bay of Bengal after encountering rough waves around noon on Monday, about 50 kilometres south of Kuakata.
The trawler, FB Barkat, was fishing in deep waters when it sank. Eight fishermen were later rescued by another trawler after they were found floating in the sea around 10:30pm.
Five fishermen remain missing. Three of them have been identified as Md Belal, Md Nur Alam and Md Ibrahim, all residents of Patharghata upazila in Barguna.
Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Trawler Owners’ Association, confirmed the incident.
According to him, FB Barkat had left for the Bay of Bengal on Friday with 13 fishermen to catch fish.
After the trawler sank, the fishermen remained afloat in the sea for some time before eight of them were rescued by another fishing vessel.
A trawler named FB Johura Khatun has been sent to the sea to search for and rescue the five missing fishermen.
