Spotify has begun rolling out a new system to identify songs created using artificial intelligence, introducing an “AI Persona” label to help listeners distinguish AI-generated music from work created by real artists.

The world’s largest music streaming service said the initiative is aimed at giving listeners greater transparency about the music they hear. Songs carrying the “AI Persona” label will not be recommended in suggested playlists unless subscribers specifically choose to receive AI-generated music.

Artists have been able to identify their creations as AI-generated since August 11, while the labels are expected to begin appearing on artist profiles from mid-September.

Spotify will also allow users to flag songs they believe were generated by AI. Artists who feel their music has been incorrectly labeled will have an opportunity to appeal the decision.

“Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” Spotify said in announcing the initiative on August 11.

The music industry has been grappling with the growing use of AI technology, which enables people without traditional musical expertise to produce professional-sounding songs within seconds.

The issue gained attention last year when the fake band Velvet Sundown saw its music attract significant streams. The creators also released AI-generated images portraying the group’s fictional members, prompting debate over transparency in AI-generated music.

Spotify has also introduced other AI-related features, including AI Credits, which allow artists to disclose how artificial intelligence was used in their music.
