Bangladesh Seeks India's Position on Sheikh Hasina's Participation in Virtual Event
Foreign Minister of State Shama Obaed Islam says political activities from Indian territory could affect bilateral ties

Bangladesh has sought clarification from the Indian government regarding its position on the participation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a virtual event scheduled to be held from India on August 5.
The matter was disclosed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam during a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (August 3).
She said that any public political activity by the convicted former prime minister from Indian territory could have a negative impact on Bangladesh-India relations. Therefore, Bangladesh considers it important for India to clearly state its position on the issue.
According to recent reports in Indian media, Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power following a student-led mass uprising, is expected to join a programme in New Delhi virtually on August 5.
Speaking at the same briefing, Shama Obaed Islam also commented on the visit of a 22-member United States delegation to Bangladesh. She said the visit is part of ongoing maritime security cooperation between the two countries and is being conducted within the broader framework of security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Regarding the various agreements between Bangladesh and the United States, she said the government would continue those agreements as long as they serve the country's national interests.
