25 development projects underway to modernise Bangladesh’s security system

The Home Ministry is implementing 25 development projects in the 2026-27 fiscal year as part of a broader effort to modernise Bangladesh’s internal security system, strengthen law enforcement, improve border management and expand emergency response capabilities.

The projects involve agencies including Bangladesh Police, RAB, Border Guard Bangladesh, Bangladesh Coast Guard, the Department of Immigration and Passports, the Department of Narcotics Control, the Department of Prisons and Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The development programme covers police infrastructure, counter-terrorism, cybercrime investigation, e-passports, automated border control, border security, maritime operations, drug rehabilitation, prison facilities and fire services.

One of the largest projects is the construction of administrative and barrack buildings for police stations across the country, with an estimated cost of Tk16,240.45 crore. The project is scheduled for completion by June 2027.

Another major police infrastructure scheme, involving police stations, outposts, investigation centres, river-police facilities, railway-police facilities, tourist-police centres and highway-police stations, has been allocated Tk7,075.49 crore and is expected to continue until September 2028.

The government is also investing Tk3,537.43 crore in strengthening the Counter-Terrorism and International Crime Prevention Centre of Bangladesh Police, while Tk1,149.70 crore has been allocated for equipment to enhance Dhaka Metropolitan Police capabilities.

Cybersecurity is another key priority. A project aimed at improving Bangladesh Police’s national and regional digital investigation capacity has an estimated cost of Tk590.87 crore.

For specialised security forces, the RAB Forces Headquarters construction project carries an estimated cost of Tk5,456.54 crore. Other initiatives will further enhance RAB’s operational and technological capabilities.

Border security projects include the construction of 73 modern composite Border Outposts at an estimated cost of Tk2,365.50 crore. Another Tk2,230.24 crore project will develop infrastructure for the newly established 63 BGB Battalion in Gazipur.

The Coast Guard is also receiving major investment, with projects for logistics and fleet-maintenance facilities and replacement vessels estimated at Tk7,576.22 crore and Tk23,148.29 crore respectively.

A major e-passport and automated border-control project has an estimated cost of Tk9,038.36 crore and is scheduled to continue until June 2028. It aims to further digitise passport services and modernise border management.

The government is also expanding drug treatment and rehabilitation facilities. A project to establish treatment and rehabilitation centres in seven divisional cities has an estimated cost of Tk1,413.15 crore and is scheduled for completion by June 2028.

Several prison modernisation projects are also underway, including expansion of Mymensingh Central Jail, reconstruction of Jamalpur and Cumilla central jails, construction of Narsingdi District Jail and development around the historic Old Dhaka Central Jail complex.

Fire Service and Civil Defence is implementing projects to expand ambulance services, build and reconstruct fire stations and provide residential facilities for personnel. A project covering 20 fire stations has an estimated cost of Tk650.96 crore.

Together, the 25 projects reflect a broader shift towards combining traditional security infrastructure with digital investigation, modern border management, maritime capabilities and improved emergency response.

The government expects the initiatives, several of which will continue through 2028 and beyond, to strengthen the operational capacity of security agencies and improve public-safety services nationwide.
