Former education minister and jailed Dr Dipu Moni has been granted 12-hour parole following the death of her husband, Barrister Toufik Newaz.

The parole will remain in effect from 6:00am to 6:00pm on Thursday, August 20, allowing Dipu Moni to attend her husband’s final rites.

The Munshiganj district administration and district magistrate approved the parole on humanitarian grounds following an application from Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Dipaboli Newaz.

Dipu Moni will first visit her husband’s body at their residence in Kalabagan, Dhaka. She will then attend the funeral prayer at Gulshan Azad Mosque before the burial at Banani Cemetery. She must return to Munshiganj District Jail by 6:00pm.

The former minister has been detained at Munshiganj District Jail since the political change in July, following her arrest in several cases.

Her husband, Barrister Toufik Newaz, died on Tuesday night at a private hospital in Dhaka after suffering from kidney and liver complications for a prolonged period.
