Shipbreaking yard gas leak: Probe committee to investigate deaths of eight workers

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has called the deaths of eight workers in a suspected toxic gas leak at a shipbreaking yard in Chattogram’s Sitakunda a “deeply unfortunate” incident.

The minister said a probe committee would be formed to investigate the accident and that necessary action would be taken based on its findings.

He made the remarks on Thursday while visiting Chattogram Medical College Hospital to express condolences to the families of the victims and inquire about the treatment of injured workers.

“There is no bias here. It is the government’s responsibility to conduct a thorough investigation and determine the facts,” he said.

The minister said the Bangladesh Shipbreakers and Recyclers Association would provide Tk 10 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. He added that the government would also extend support and an army team had been sent to the site to help stop the gas leak.

He said the government has been focusing on ensuring compliance in the shipbreaking industry since taking office. He also highlighted the importance of following international standards, including certifications under the Hong Kong Convention for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling.

The minister said authorities would investigate whether there were any shortcomings in compliance and take appropriate action if any irregularities were found.

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, BNP leader Abul Hashem Bakkar, Chattogram Customs Agents Association President and Chamber Director SM Saiful Alam, among others, were present during the visit.
