Benazir cannot leave UAE despite being granted bail: Home Minister

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed will not be allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates despite being granted bail there, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahad has said.

Speaking to journalists in Rajshahi on Sunday, the minister said that Benazir has been granted bail on the condition that he must not leave the UAE. However, the full details of the court’s bail conditions are still not known.

The Home Minister added that the relevant authorities have been instructed to obtain a certified copy of the court order containing all the bail conditions.

He further said that the government had earlier appointed a law firm in the United Arab Emirates and directed it to take necessary legal steps to challenge the bail.

According to informed sources, a court in the UAE granted bail to Benazir Ahmed last Thursday.

The former police chief was arrested in Dubai in June following a Red Notice issued by Interpol at the request of Bangladesh authorities.
