President Shahabuddin’s resignation accepted

The resignation letter of President Mohammed Shahabuddin has been accepted, according to the Parliament Secretariat.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will hold a press conference at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 5pm today (Friday) to provide details regarding the matter, the Parliament Secretariat said.

Earlier, amid speculation over the president’s possible resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed cut short his Thailand visit and returned home on Friday afternoon.

He arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 12:15pm. Asked by journalists about the president’s resignation, the speaker said he had no confirmed information about the matter.

Later in the afternoon, the Parliament Secretariat announced that the speaker would hold a press conference. A senior official of the secretariat said the briefing had been called regarding the president.

Under the Constitution, the president may resign by submitting a signed letter addressed to the speaker.

If the office of the president falls vacant, the speaker shall perform the functions of the president until a new president is elected.

According to Article 54 of the Constitution, if the office of the president becomes vacant, or if the president is unable to discharge his functions due to absence, illness or any other reason, the speaker shall perform the functions of the president until a new president is elected.
