Balochistan independence claims threatens Pakistan's integrity

Pakistan is facing growing challenges to its territorial integrity from several regions, with the Balochistan independence movement emerging as one of the most serious concerns.

The country is also confronting intensifying resistance in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, growing resentment in Sindh, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the armed Balochistan Liberation Army.

In recent days, a post circulating widely on X has claimed that Baloch rebels have driven Pakistani security forces out of large parts of Balochistan and now control 85 per cent of the province.

Balochistan accounts for around 44 per cent of Pakistan's territory and 6 per cent of its population. The region also possesses significant deposits of gold, copper, gas and coal.

The post further claimed that Baloch rebels had announced a national anthem, a separate currency and flag, and had established political and military structures.

Mir Yar Baloch, a US-based Baloch human rights and political activist and special adviser to the Middle East Media Research Institute's Balochistan Studies Project, declared Balochistan's independence.

In a post on X, he claimed that Baloch residents had taken to the streets and expressed their opposition to Pakistan. He also called on India and the international community to recognise Balochistan.

The developments come amid growing attention to the Baloch independence movement and the broader challenges facing Pakistan's territorial integrity.
