Residents of Sreepur in Gazipur planted rice seedlings on the Noyonpur-Bormi road on Monday in an unusual protest against a contractor who allegedly abandoned renovation work, leaving the project incomplete for nearly two years.

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) awarded the renovation contract to M/S Shammi Enterprise under the 2024-25 fiscal year's GOB Maintenance Project-3. The project, worth Tk 4.09 crore, covers the nearly six-kilometre stretch from Noyonpur Bazar to the CCDB intersection.

Construction work began in mid-2024. However, after excavating the road and laying brick aggregate, the contractor allegedly stopped work and has remained unreachable for more than two years.

As a result, the unfinished road has developed large potholes that become waterlogged during rainfall, causing severe hardship for commuters and local residents.

Frustrated by the prolonged delay and deteriorating road conditions, residents staged a symbolic protest by planting paddy seedlings on the damaged roadway, demanding that the construction work be completed without further delay.
