Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGT) has officially opened a $170 million container terminal at Chittagong Port, marking Bangladesh’s first international port concession and expanding the company’s operations from the Red Sea into one of South Asia’s busiest trade routes.

The terminal will be operated under a 22-year concession awarded in 2023 as part of RSGT’s strategy to strengthen its global port infrastructure network in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

Chittagong Port manages around 92 percent of Bangladesh’s import and export trade and handles 98 percent of the country’s containerised cargo. In 2025, the port processed 3.4 million TEUs, reflecting a 4 percent increase from the previous year, while overall cargo throughput climbed by more than 11 percent to 137.8 million tonnes.

RSGT, through its investment arm Red Sea Port Development Co. under the SISCO portfolio, owns a 36.36 percent stake in the project. Since assuming responsibility for the terminal, the company has increased its annual handling capacity from 250,000 TEUs to 500,000 TEUs by installing four modern ship-to-shore cranes. According to RSGT, the upgrades have improved productivity by 30 percent compared with competing regional terminals, making it the country’s most technologically advanced container terminal.

RSGT Group Chief Executive Officer Lars Vang Christensen said the Bangladesh terminal reflects Saudi Arabia’s expertise and long-term vision beyond its borders. He added that the project represents the beginning of the company’s expansion as a leading port operator in emerging markets.

The company has also indicated that it may invest up to $1 billion in Bangladesh’s maritime sector in the future. The announcement comes as RSGT and its parent company, SISCO Holding, continue expanding through new 20-year port concessions in Yanbu, Jazan and Jeddah, alongside ongoing discussions with CMA CGM regarding a terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port.
